Giving a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Nihari* traded the burden of financial hardship for a harvest of hope, turning a small TCD investment into a thriving future for her family of five.

Nihari* traded the burden of financial hardship for a harvest of hope, turning a small TCD investment into a thriving future for her family of five. - Giving a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Nihari comes from a poor family that has faced many financial hardships. Her family of five depended entirely on her husband’s labor work, often done outside the village. Despite his efforts, it was very difficult to meet the family’s basic needs. Nihari herself had no source of income and was fully occupied with household responsibilities and caring for the children. The family had no assets—not even a single goat or hen—to support their livelihood.

Everything began to change when Nihari participated in the Transformational Community Development (TCD) income generation program. Through the training, she learned practical ways to improve her family’s financial situation, especially through animal keeping. Inspired and motivated, she decided to start goat farming. However, due to a lack of capital, she was unable to take the first step.

With the support of TCD, which provided a small amount of seed money, and a little contribution from her husband, Nihari was able to purchase goats and begin her journey. Today, her goats are healthy and growing well. She is filled with joy and confidence, knowing that her family now has a reliable path toward meeting their basic needs.

Nihari expresses deep gratitude to TCD for the opportunity that transformed her life. Her story has also become an inspiration to others in the community. Many women now recognize that animal keeping can be a practical and manageable source of income alongside household responsibilities.

Encouraged by such success, many community members are eager to engage in income-generating activities. TCD continues to support and empower families like Nihari’s, helping them move toward self-reliance and a more sustainable future.
