Solar lights bring renewed hope, dignity, and confidence after dark.
In the remote village of Binodpur in the Sundarbans, life has always been shaped by uncertainty. Known as the cyclone capital of India, the area frequently faces devastating storms that damage infrastructure and disrupt daily life. One of the biggest challenges for the community has been unstable electricity, leaving families in darkness for long hours.
For years, this lack of reliable power affected every aspect of life. Children struggled to complete their homework after sunset, small businesses suffered, and families had limited time to gather, talk, and share life together. Among those affected was Sundari, a hardworking woman who runs a small tea stall to support her family. Due to the frequent power outages, Sundari had to close her shop early in the evening. Darkness not only reduced her income but also limited her ability to serve customers who depended on her stall after a long day’s work.
Recognizing these challenges, the Transformational Community Development (TCD) committee, with support from GHNI, introduced a practical and sustainable solution—low-cost portable solar home systems. With GHNI’s generous partnership covering half of the cost, families were encouraged and empowered to invest in this life-changing technology.
Last month, Sundari became one of the beneficiaries. She purchased a portable solar light system, and the impact was immediate. Today, Sundari’s tea stall no longer fades into darkness after sunset. Instead, it shines as a small beacon of hope in the village. With reliable light, she can keep her shop open longer, serve more customers, and increase her daily income. The solar light has also created a warm and welcoming space where villagers gather in the evening, sharing stories, building relationships, and strengthening community bonds.
Sundari joyfully shares that this simple change has brought dignity, confidence, and new opportunities into her life. Her story is not just about light—it is about transformation.
So far, 41 families in Binodpur have adopted portable solar systems. Children can now study at night, households can carry out daily activities without interruption, and the village is gradually moving from darkness to light.
Sundar’s story stands as a powerful testimony of how a simple, affordable solution combined with community effort and partnership support can transform lives. Thank you, GHNI, for being a light in places where darkness once prevailed.
Thank you,
